The first would be to continue developing the car on this platform, alongside the Mini Roadster and Coupe, but to take a page from Audi and make it four-wheel drive. Among the undisputed advantages of this strategy are (1) a short path to production (spring 2014 for a ragtop roadsten fall 2014 for a coupe version), (2) the traction bonus inherent to four-wheel drive, and (3) the economies of scale offered by bitching up to a high-volume architecture.

Porsche Wants to Keep Profitability Lead, Automotive News Says

Porsche SE wants to retain and build on its position as the world’s most profitable carmaker, Automotive News Europe reported, according to the e-mailed preview of an article that will appear in Tuesday’s edition.

Volkswagen AG needs to build five or six new plants worldwide to meet demand, the magazine said, citing Chief Executive Officer Matthias Mueller. The VW Group plans to sell 10 million and 11 million cars a year and production capacity is at a maximum 8 million, the magazine reported.

Mueller also said Porsche wants to sell 30,000 units a year on average of the new 911, compared with about 20,000 units last year when the old 911 came to the end of its life cycle.

ECOtality, Roush starts manufacturing of blink EV charging stations

ECOtality, a provider of clean electric transportation technologies and Roush have started the mass manufacturing of its Blink Level 2 Charging Stations at Roush Manufacturing.

ECOtality partnered with Roush in July 2010 to manufacture the company's Blink home and commercial charging stations.

The company said that the agreement marked a major move for Roush into the electric vehicle industry.

This is an important evolutionary step for Roush and the automotive industry, as an existing Roush automotive facility has been modified to now support the developing EV industry, said the firm.

ECOtality president Don Karner said throughout each step of the EV Project, they've seen unprecedented consumer demand for electric vehicles, and partners like Roush have played a key role as they've brought their smart charging stations to market.

"Roush's stellar reputation and automotive OEM experience made them an ideal partner as we made the move to full-scale manufacturing," Karner said.

"Together we are excited to bring an innovative, American-made charging station to EV drivers nationwide."

The Blink charging stations form the centerpiece of the rich charging infrastructure network ECOtality is deploying, as part of the DOE-backed EV Project.

The home charging stations offer several advantages over conventional charging stations, including advanced energy monitoring capabilities that allow homeowners to optimize their energy usage and charge their vehicles when rates are lowest.

The company said that, the Blink Network charger interface is the hub where users can receive information about their EV and Blink Home Charging Station including charge status, statistics and history.

Automotive Research Association of India vows to preserve greenery

The director of the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Shrikant Marathe, said on Tuesday the institute proposes to build laboratories on the land to be deleted from the hill-top zone and converted to public-semi-public zone. “The construction will not lead to a concrete jungle on the hill,” he assured.

Marathe was speaking to reporters on Tuesday to dispel fears that ARAI’s proposed expansion would lead to concretisation of Vetal Tekdi and loss of its green cover. Marathe said the state government allotted the entire survey number 102, measuring 260 acres in Kothrud, to the ARAI on 90 years’ lease in 1970.

Though the entire land was allotted to the ARAI, its activities are spread over 25 acres, of which its laboratories and office buildings cover 3.5 acres. The remaining land, except for internal roads, has been developed for tree cover, he said.

Under the proposed expansion plan, the ARAI would set up advanced laboratories to develop less polluting Euro-5 and Euro-6 technologies for greener and safer vehicles. These facilities are required to be used along with the existing facilities.

“It is a logical extension, considering the future needs of the automobile sector and could not be set up elsewhere,” he said.
The ARAI director said the laboratories would be set up under the National Automotive Testing Research and Development Infrastructure Project (Natrip), an ambitious initiative of the Union government’s ‘Automotive Mission Plan 2006 to 2016’.

This plan has the vision of raising the auto sector’s contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) to 10% and creation of over 25 million jobs.The Union ministry of heavy industries has sanctioned Rs250 crore for this ultra-modern research and development project.Marathe said if the land is not available, then this Rs250-crore project can go outside Maharashtra and it will be a big deterrent for industry in Pune.

He said it is important to note that only another 3.5 acres would be utilised for this expansion and the total area under construction of both existing and proposed development would be less than 5% of the total land. ARAI’s expansion plan does not include any residential construction.

Coda Automotive names new CEO

California electric car developer Coda Automotive Inc. has hired a General Motors Co. veteran to lead the company.

Coda named Philip Murtagh CEO, replacing former chief Kevin Czinger, who resigned in November. Murtagh spent more than 30 years at GM in various leadership positions, capped by a five-year stint at CEO of GM China that ended in 2005. He’s credited with growing the automaker’s China presence and overseeing more than 15 vehicle rollouts on three continents.

In recent years, Murtagh worked in executive posts for Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. and Chrysler LLC and served as a consultant.

He arrives at a critical time for Coda, which is looking to deliver its battery-powered electric vehicle to some customers later this year. The company also plans to build a crucial component to the car – a lithium-ion battery – in Columbus, a project that could bring 1,000 jobs and a more than $500 million investment to the city. That is contingent, however, on Coda’s joint venture with a Chinese company securing a loan of $400 million to $500 million from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Mac Heller, the Coda co-chairman who served as interim CEO, said in a statement that Murtagh is “an industry veteran with large-scale manufacturing, sales and marketing experience who has the precise combination of skills necessary to lead Coda’s mission to transform the auto industry by accelerating the adoption of clean, zero emissions technology.”

As Murtagh joins the company, Coda founder Miles Rubin is retiring as co-chairman but retaining a director and chairman emeritus title along with the largest stake in the company.

Progressive Automotive X-Prize officials announced the winners

It may look odd, but the ultralight Edison2 Very Light Car gets 102.5 mpg, it does so with good old-fashioned internal combustion and it’s just won the Progressive Automotive X Prize.

The Very Light Car was among three innovative, if unusual, automobiles that shared the $10 million pot the X Prize promised to whomever built a production-ready vehicle capable of getting 100 mpg or its equivalent. Progressive Automotive X-Prize officials announced the winners today in Washington, D.C., some 30 months after the competition began.

“We’ve seen a shift in the market since we first launched this competition, and a greater awareness by people everywhere to think more seriously about the actions we take, and how they affect our environment,” Peter Diamandis, chairman and CEO of the X Prize Foundation, said. “Gas mileage ranks as one of our top concerns when purchasing a new vehicle and I believe strongly that the innovations showcased throughout the life of this competition will continue to impact and improve our car buying options for the future.”

Now that the contest is won, the hard work begins. The winning teams hope to leverage their success to get their vehicles, or at least the technology underpinning them, into showrooms.

Although it seems highly unlikely that we’d see the Edison2 in showrooms, the car’s innovative use of aerodynamics, lightweight materials and a small displacement engine burning E85 is sure to catch the attention of automakers. The car weighs just 830 pounds, and it reportedly is the most aerodynamic vehicle ever tested in General Motors’ wind tunnel.

The remaining $5 million was split among Li-Ion Motors and Peraves X-Tracer Team Switzerland, both of which built electric vehicles. Both companies say they are taking orders for their vehicles.

Li-Ion Motors, which was formerly known as Hybrid Technologies, took top honors in the alternative side-by-side division. The Wave II uses a lightweight aluminum chassis and weighs 2,176 pounds. It got the equivalent of 187 mpg and more than 100 miles of range in a real-world driving cycle, according to X Prize officials. It does zero to 60 in 14.7 seconds.

X-Tracer won the alternative tandem class with the E-Tracer, a wild vehicle that blurs the line between motorcycle and car. The X-Tracer uses outrigger wheels to keep from toppling over. This clever design has two extra outrigger wheels that deploy at low speed to stabilize the vehicle. It weighs 1,436 pounds and delivered the equivalent of 187.6 mpg and more than 100 miles of range. It does zero to 60 in 6.6 seconds.

The Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) Worldwide wants all car owners to understand how their vehicle's air conditioning system works, be able to recognize problems and optimize performance so they can enjoy maximum comfort while driving.

To achieve the quickest interior cool-down:

• If possible, leave the windows down slightly on hot sunny days. Temperatures in a closed car can exceed 140 degrees F. An air conditioning (A/C) system works by removing heat, so the cooler the interior is to start with, the easier and faster the A/C will do its job.

• When you first get in the car, roll all the windows completely down, or even better, open the doors for a short period of time. This helps the hot interior air escape quickly.

• When you first turn the A/C on, set the controls to "MAX" and/or "REC", and use highest blower speed. This moves the greatest volume of air, recirculates cooling air for even faster cool-down, and prevents hot outside air from entering. As soon as you are comfortable, switch the system to "NORM" or "OUTSIDE," and select a lower fan speed. The lower the blower speed, the colder the air from the system.

• Applying window tint can help reduce interior temperatures. The tint does not have to be dark to reflect sunlight - some tints have a metallic substance within them for this purpose. Always check your local and state regulations; window-tinting products may not be legal in some states or municipalities.

Porsche Boxster growing to make room for small two-seat model, The next-generation Porsche Boxster will get a longer wheelbase and measure nearly 173 inches long (4394.2mm) overall, British magazine Autocar says on its Web site.

Why is the Boxster growing? To create room at the bottom of the Porsche lineup for a new two-seat model based on the Volkswagen BlueSport concept shown at the Detroit auto show in 2009, the report says. The current Boxster is 4342mm long.

Coda's self-titled debut sedan is small in stature but carries ambitious goals for the upstart California electric-car maker.

The five-passenger electric car is expected to launch this December in California, and Coda Automotive wants to sell the cars across the nation by the end of 2013. It's the first product for a company that is banking on the battery: the 33.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion unit powers a small motor for a range of 90 to 120 miles.

Coda brass are candid: It won't be the only car for most people, but it can meet the daily needs of most people. And in plain English, it's a “real car.” There's a trunk. It has fairly bland, universal styling and is roughly the size of a Chevrolet Cobalt. The ambitious goal is to sell 14,000 Codas next year with a sticker in the mid-$30,000 range after the $7,500 federal tax credit and other potential incentives.

“Consumers want real range,”

said Mike Jackson, Coda senior vice president of sales and distribution.

Still, the company faces obstacles, including offerings from established companies like the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf. Its business plan also is centered heavily on importing key elements from China. The chassis and body will be built in there at a factory run by Coda. The batteries also come from China, via a joint venture with a company called Lishen that also supplies batteries to Apple and Motorola. Final assembly and inspection of the cars will be completed in at Coda's Santa Monica, Calif., base. The batteries carry an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty, and the rest of the car has three-year, 36,000-mile coverage.

The car will be outfitted with an eight-inch navigation screen with available real-time traffic and weather updates.

A longtime former General Motors marketing executive, Jackson was part of the discussions on naming the Volt and is acutely aware of the climate for all things green.

“The core consumers would be interested in technology and kind of early adopters,”

Jackson said.

Power comes from a small engine making 134 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque mated to a single-speed transmission. Maximum torque is present at launch, Coda says, and the batteries are located under the seats and can be charged in two to six hours. The Coda is based on a Mitsubishi platform but is mostly redesigned. It rides on 17-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels and a four-wheel independent suspension with front and rear MacPherson struts. Top speed is limited to 80 mph.

The company is taking a fairly untraditional approach for distribution and will offer the cars in informational stores in high-end shopping centers. The final purchase is then made online. There also will be a flagship store in a former Saturn dealership in Santa Monica. A car is expected to be displayed later this year at the Los Angeles auto show.

How do you find a shop you can trust to service your vehicle—one that will make you feel confident about your choice and provide quality repairs at a fair price? Here are some tips:

Start with the most obvious. Is the facility neat and clean? Are employees genuinely concerned with your questions and are their answers direct, to the point and reasonable?

Look at the credentials of the business and the employees who will service your vehicle. Most shops will post educational certifications or accomplishments and professional business affiliations in their waiting areas. Some affiliations to look for include trade association membership, such as the Automotive Service Association (ASA), and membership in the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Look for certification or education offered by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) and the Automotive Management Institute (AMI).

Ask about the equipment used to diagnose and perform the service. Is it up-to-date and are the technicians educated in the proper equipment use?

The Porsche GT3 RSR launches into the new model year with extensive modifications. The most powerful race car based on the Porsche 911, which last year scored wins at the 24 hour races of Le Mans and Spa as well as overall victory at the Nuerburgring 24 hours, competes in the GT2 class at international long distance races. The most distinguish-ing feature of the new GT3 RSR is the front end which received major improvements to the aerodynamics. The majority of innovations however are hidden under the weight-optimised body.

Aside from the easily recognisable additional spoilers on the front apron, so-called flicks, an optimised air ducting with newly-designed side air outlets generates more downforce and reduces drag. The rear end including the rear wing was taken over from the predecessor. Extensive changes to the suspension cinematics increase mechanical grip considerably. The range of possible suspension set-ups was broadened.

The 3.8-litre boxer engine of the GT3 RSR remains unchanged apart from slight improvements to details. It delivers 465 hp (342 kW) at 8,000 revs per minute and delivers a maximum torque of 430 Nm at 7,250 revs. The rev limiter of the efficient six-cylinder kicks in at 9,400 rpm.
Much of the know-how in the GT3 RSR’s totally new gearbox has come from the RS Spyder sports prototype. The sequential six-speed unit, developed by Porsche engineers, is considerably lighter than its predecessor. Internal friction was substantially reduced. The flat angle of the drive shafts allows teams a wider range of suspension set-ups.

Aside from the GT3 Cup and the GT3 Cup S, the GT3 RSR is the third race car based on the Porsche 911 offered by Porsche Motorsport. Thirty-five units of the fastest and most powerful long distance racer made in Weissach, apart from the exclusive RS Spyder sports prototype, are now being produced and delivered to customer teams around the globe. The price of the GT3 RSR is 349,800 Euro plus VAT.

Chevy crossover will have 3 rows of seats

CHICAGO - Chevrolet is adding a crossover with three rows of seats to its lineup — the Chevrolet Traverse — which is set to debut this week at the Chicago Auto Show.

A crossover vehicle is one that has most of the attributes of a truck-based sport utility vehicle but is more maneuverable and gets better gas mileage because it’s built on car underpinnings.

The Traverse, which borrows its bold front end and styling from the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, joins the two-row Equinox in Chevrolet’s crossover family. The Traverse will go into production in Spring Hill, Tenn., in the third quarter of this year.

The Traverse isn’t coming a moment too soon for General Motors Corp.’s Chevrolet division. Automakers have been racing to introduce more crossovers as the segment continues to grow in an otherwise soft market. Crossover sales rose 16 percent in 2007, despite a 3 percent decline in the market overall.

GM’s Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook crossovers were a bright spot for the automaker in last year’s bleak market, and they continued to perform well in January. Acadia sales rocketed up 335 percent in January from the same month in 2007, while Outlook sales more than doubled. Those models all feature three rows of seating

Chevrolet will also face competition from other new three-row crossovers this year, including the Ford Flex and Dodge Journey.

“We think the Traverse is the right vehicle for the right time,” Ed Peper, Chevrolet’s general manager, said in a statement.

Peper said the Traverse drives like a smaller vehicle but is large enough to accommodate adults in the third row and will have a large cargo space. It also has sliding second-row seats for easier access to the third row.

The Chicago Auto Show opens to the public Friday after two days of media previews.

GM also announced Wednesday at the show that half its U.S. vehicle volume will run on ethanol by 2012, just as partner Coskata Inc. is expected to be ramping up ethanol production.

In a speech at the show, GM North America President Troy Clarke said GM will have 11 ethanol-capable vehicles on the market this year and 15 in 2009. Clarke also announced that GM will be producing its first four-cylinder ethanol-capable model, the FlexFuel Chevrolet HHR, in 2010.

“We don't only want to respond to the needs of the market. We want to anticipate them,” Clarke said.

Preparing now for frigid weather conditions will help keep your vehicle on the road, advises AAA Michigan. This month, the Auto Club has received calls for emergency road service that are well above normal levels for this time of year. AAA is giving priority to callers stranded on freeways or in traffic, where they are facing hazards.

Motorists can help keep their vehicles on the road by doing the following:

* Check your battery strength. Faulty batteries cause more car starting problems than any other factor. At zero degrees, a good battery has 35 percent less starting power.
* Park your car in the garage. If you have no garage, put a tarp over the hood or park protected from prevailing winds. To keep doors from freezing shut, place a plastic trash bag between the door and the frame.
* Keep the fuel tank at least half-full to avoid fuel-line freeze-up.
* To avoid frozen door locks, buy a lubricant available in most auto supply stores. If your lock freezes, heat your key with a pocket lighter but remember to wear gloves or hold the key with pliers. Or, fill a plastic jug with hot water. Hold it against the door panel or lock area. Do not throw hot water on the car. It may freeze and run the risk of cracking glass.
* If you become stranded, stay with your vehicle. It provides excellent shelter from the cold and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you. If you can start your engine, run it only enough to keep warm. Make sure the exhaust pipe is snow-free. Keep emergency supplies in the car, such as a cell phone, boots, hats, gloves, blankets, a "coffee can heater," flashlight and reflective triangle.
